Huntsville, Alabama, restaurant and night club enthusiasts may or may not have noticed the obituary in The Huntsville Times on Wednesday for Alexander Thomas James DeLuca III. His nickname -- Duke -- may have jogged some memories, though.
I wrote a weekly column about nightlife and restaurants in Huntsville for 30 years, and the name Duke DeLuca was commonly mentioned during the first decade. He was a popular proprietor of nightspots -- the one that sticks in mind is Cat & Mouse Club -- although he left town in the 1970s or '80s. Few people today can remember just what his interests were.
His name is among the Hall of Fame for Huntsville nightlife: Jerriel Stephens and his late brother, Dennis Stephens, as well as their father, simply known as Steve; Dewey Brazelton; Ken Moss; Pat Patton; Leon Rucker; Mark Komara; and Ron Jeffreys; to name a few. We'll add more to the list as time goes on.
Let's hope this blog jogs some memories and brings more names to add to the list.
